The Southampton Port Chaplaincy for the Apostleship of the Sea
The Southampton Port Chaplaincy for the Apostleship of the Sea is based at a dedicated office at St Joseph’s Church in Bugle Street and is the centre for all activities in support of Apostleship of the Sea for seafarers visiting Southampton ports.
The Apostleship of the Sea is a Catholic charity supporting seafarers worldwide. In Southampton we provide practical and pastoral care to all seafarers, regardless of nationality, belief or race. Our port chaplain is Father John Lavers and he is supported by Volunteer Ship Visitors who welcome seafarers, offer welfare services, discrete advice, practical help, care and friendship. We also offer support to seafarers in local hospitals.
The local team is part of an international network known to the maritime world as Stella Maris, working in 334 ports with 227 port chaplains in 59 countries. Where ongoing support is needed we can call on other Stella Maris offices at future ports of call.
Fr John Lavers
Father John is the Port Chaplain in Southampton and other ports along the south coast of England from Weymouth and Portland in the west, extending to Portsmouth and Fawley, the Channel Islands and Newhaven in the east.

St Joseph’s Church
St Joseph’s is the nearest Catholic Church to the Port in Southampton. Here we offer visiting seafarers a convivial place to talk and relax with free wifi access. On Monday at 12:00 A.M. there is Holy Mass preceded by the Angelus, Rosary and Sacrament of Reconciliation. The office also provides the base for our Ship Visitors. The church is located within a short walking distance of the West Quay Shopping Centre.
In Southampton we have a particular need for more Volunteer Ship Visitors. For further information please contact Fr John.
