The Southampton Port Chaplaincy for the Stella Maris (formerly Apostleship of the Sea)
The Southampton Port Chaplaincy for Stella Maris is based at a dedicated office at St Joseph’s Church in Bugle Street and is the centre for all activities in support of Stella Maris for seafarers visiting Southampton and Southern Region ports.
Stella Maris is a Catholic charity supporting seafarers and fishers worldwide. In Southampton we provide practical and pastoral care to all seafarers, regardless of nationality, belief or race. Our lay Port Chaplains are Mr Charles Stuart and Mr Gregory Hogan and they are supported by Volunteer Ship Visitors who welcome seafarers, offer welfare services, discrete advice, practical help, care and friendship. We also offer support to seafarers in local hospitals.
The local team is part of an international network known to the maritime world as Stella Maris, working in 334 ports with 227 Port Chaplains in 59 countries. Where ongoing support is needed we can call on other Stella Maris offices at future ports of call.
Our Stella Maris Region
Our Port Chaplains in Southampton are responsible for other ports along the south coast, from Portland and Weymouth in the west, through Fawley and Portsmouth, as far east as Newhaven. The region includes the Isle of Wight and Channel Islands.

St Joseph’s Church
St Joseph’s is the nearest Catholic Church to the Port in Southampton. Here we offer visiting seafarers a convivial place to talk and relax with free wifi access. The office, which is not permanently staffed, also provides the base for our Ship Visitors. The church is located within a short walking distance of the West Quay Shopping Centre.
In Southampton and throughout our region we have a particular need for more Volunteer Ship Visitors to support our work in our ports. We offer training and Personal Protection Equipment. For further information please contact .
